Why does nuno bettencourt paint his nails?

I had read that it's hard to see his fingers on stage but that doesn't seem like a legit reason as many guitarist have played on stage and many didn't paint their nails. He either is close to blind or is just gender blind. Just to note, Nuno is a 80's guitarist so painting nails if your in a rock band was quite common. Gender roles were being pushed back then.
