Will it hurt to take out a super tampon?

It should not hurt to remove a tampon. If a tampon is dry, and has not collected very much menstrual fluid, it can sometimes be a little bit tricky to remove, because of the dryness. However, it should not be painful. It should not hurt any more than inserting a tampon in.

It should not hurt to remove a tampon of any absorbency, however if you find that removal is painful then there are a few possible explanations as to why you're experiencing pain;

1. Using too high an absorbency for your flow.
   As tampons absorb vaginal fluids as well as menstrual blood they can dry-out vaginal tissues causing irritation and damage, when removing the tampon friction can pull and rub against the already irritated and damaged tissues so cause discomfort. If using too high an absorbency for your flow the damage can be greater and thus the discomfort can be greater - always use lowest absorbency for your flow and do not use tampons when flow is particularly light or when not menstruating.
   
   It's a good idea to start with lowest absorbency tampons, if they leak within 1-2 hours then consider switching to a higher absorbency, but if the tampon is dry or brown in places after 4-6 hours use a lower absorbency, if already using lowest absorbency time to switch to pads.
   
   
2. Lack of relaxation.
   If you are tensed-up then vaginal muscles tense-up and close around the tampon, so upon removal you are going to be pulling the tampon against the vaginal walls - the more you struggle to remove the tampon the more you will tense-up so increasing pain. Take a deep breath and relax, pull the tampon gently but firmly and the tampon should come out easily.
   
   
3. Irritation from tampons.
   Tampons can contain various ingredients that can cause irritation, even if the tampon is non-scented there are many chemical ingredients you may be sensitive or allergic to. By irritating vaginal tissues they can become sore and so friction of the tampon against irritated vaginal walls can cause discomfort. It's best to use hypo-allergenic organic cotton tampons.
   
   
4. The hymen.
   Many people's hymens will still be in tact when using tampons, although tampons can tear the hymen this is rare but the tampon can get caught behind the hymen - if this happens simply guide the tampon past the hymen by angling the tampon differently or pushing the hymen back.

Obviously you should only be using super absorbency if your flow is heavy enough: if the tampon isn't full of blood after 4-6 hours it may be dry so uncomfortable to insert, it also means higher risk of TSS so use lower absorbency. If you tense up vaginal muscles tense causing vaginal walls to tighten, thus tightening around the tampon to make it harder to remove, be sure to relax.
