VEINS
- Transport blood towards the heart
- Contain semi-lunar valves to prevent backflow of blood
- Blood under low pressure, no pulse, blood moves (slowly) between valves with muscle contractions
- Structure = thin collagen (outer) and elastic fibre layers, inner squamous epithelium layer
CAPILLARIES
- Transport blood between tissues
- No valves
- Lower pressure than arteries, no pulse
- Movement of blood is slow to give maximum time for diffusion of substances
- Structure = single layer of squamous epithelium cells, no collagen or elastic fibres
