There are many things that determine how flora and fauna will adapt to their environment. For example, the narrower the niche (how a species fits in to it's environment), the less likely that animal will be able to adapt if, let's say, in several million years, Florida becomes a frozen tundra because of moving plate tectonics (which can happen) (ex. of narrow niche - Panda, Polar Bear; ex. of broad niche - Cockaroach, Lizard). Also, the faster a species reproduces is an important factor in how well that species will adapt to changing environments. For example, if Florida becomes a tundra, who do you think will survive by giving their offspring availability to their species gene pool (where all the species accumulated genes are held) faster; the rabbits, or the bears? The answer would probably be the rabbits (even though the bears might survive as well, the rabbits will thrive better).
