Monocotyledons (often abbreviated to "monocot") and dicotyledons are two categories of flower producing plants (angiosperms) and both have different characteristics.

A monocotyledonous plant has 1 cotyledon in the seed (hence the name mono = one + cotyledon), parallel veins up and down the leaf (like grass plants), and floral parts are usually in multiples of 3. Monocot plants also normally have shallow adventitious root systems.

By comparison A dicotyledonous plant has 2 cotyledons in the seed, veins branching from a midrib, and floral parts usually in multiples of 4 or 5. Dicot plants normally have branched, but predominantly tap-toot systems.
