I guess God took both, rib or side and X-chromosome. Anyway. If I lose my hands by accident and get a child after that, I guess my child would not born handless.

Yes, according to the biblical account in Genesis. Many people have come up with many different answers but why couldn't the actual story in Genesis 2:21-23 be literal?

Consider that the Scripture states God used one of Adam's 12 pairs of ribs and did not alter his DNA. Wouldn't subsequent offspring have the original 12 pairs of ribs?

Consider a person losing an arm or leg by accident or disease. If that person had children, wouldn't they be born with 2 arms or 2 legs regardless?

So, the literal translation has a high probability. Also consider the fact that rib bones can regenerate and do today after certain surgeries. As long as the surrounding 'casing' remains intact because this is were bone cells regenerate.

In Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible, he notes wisely in my opinion, that God does not use a bone from man's head in order for man to rule over woman nor out of his feet so a man can trample over the woman "but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved."

I can see where this question stems from. No, women are not made from the ribs of men.

In the Bible, it says that the first woman was created when God put Adam (the first man) into a deep sleep. He then took one of his ribs and made woman. This could easily be just a figure of speech or, rather, "a way of saying something else" (for example, it also says the world was created in 6 days; one of God's days could be drastically different from what we consider a day). It could be symbolism of a sort as well. Maybe it implies that He created both man and woman to have a special bond with each other. Or, it could imply that since he made her using the "rib", she is equal to him (since the rib is from the middle of the body).

In my opinion, it is one of those things that was supposed to be left for us to wonder; one of the great many mysteries of the universe that is simply too amazing for a human mind to grasp.

One more thing: not all Christians believe that women are made from man ribs. :)

The first creation story (Genesis 1:1-2:4a), attributed to the Priestly Source, portrays God as all-powerful. He simply spoke things into existence, and this is how most Christians think of God today. However, thre are two distinct creation stories in Genesis and we must scrupulously avoid reading into the second story, which is attributed to the Yahwist and begins at Genesis 2:4b, any facts or notions taken from the first creation story if we mean to understand the story on its own terms.

In the second creation story, God could not make living things out of nothing. The plants already existed (Genesis 2:5), waiting for God to make it rain, but God had to make Adam and each of the animals out of dirt (Genesis 2:7; 19). Rather than also making Eve from dirt, he made her out of a rib from Adam, or part of his side (Genesis 2:22). This is arguably more romantic, as well as identifying Adam and Eve as inseparable.
