We are looking for the possible blood types of a baby.

Parental information:

  • Mother type A pos --can be AA or AO with Rh (++) or (+-)
  • Genes to contribute: A, O, (+), (-)
  • Father type O neg --can only be OO (--) = contributes O and (-)
Baby receives one gene from each parent:
  • Baby is type AO (+-)/(--) = Type A pos/neg
  • Baby is type OO (+-)/(--) = Type O pos/neg
Since A and O are the only ABO genes that the parents are able to contribute, those will be the two blood types of the baby. Since one parent is Rh+, then the baby may be either Rh (+) or (-).

HOWEVER: There is more to ABO blood typing that just the ABO gene.

There is also an inhibitory gene that will change any genotype into the phenotype O.

Therefore a person with genetically AB blood can be tested as having Type O.

If the Type O parent has the inhibitory gene affecting his A, B or AB type,

then the Type B or AB baby is definitely possible.
