Sickness, illness, and disease are essentially the same thing. But a person can be suffering a sickness or disease condition that is not related to disease organisms such as bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens or to a cancer or other internal causes. The cause of the illness could instead be an allergic reaction to external substances or could be a natural reaction to environmental poisons or even ingested or absorbed poisons in small dosages. Some examples are lead poisoning from utensils or water pipes, overexposure to solvents used on the job, and excessive exposure to agricultural pesticides or herbicides.
