Technically, mushrooms are not plants. They are fungi, which is a complete separate kingdom from plants in the contemporary classification of organisms. Organisms under the kingdom of Plantae do need light for photosynthesis.

Why does a plant grow taller without sunlight?

In total darkness, no plant (aside from fungi) will grow at all. But with the tiniest amount of light, the plant will grow toward that light source. If the light source is dim, the plant may grow to extraordinary heights trying to reach the light. As an example, some utility companies reserve land to grow spruce trees for future utility poles. The trees are planted far too close together for good growth. They compete intensely with each other, trying to get sun. Result: They all grow extraordinarily tall - and straight. Perfect utility poles.
