A prism in front of one eye will change apparent position of an object you're looking at.

It will shift your visual field, but not widen it or "improve" it.

A prism used with both eyes open would most likely cause double vision or the muscles around the eye would adjust to negate it's affect entirely.

Prisms are generally used to shift the apparent location of an image in one eye so that both eyes can pay attention to the that same object at once, giving binocular single vision. If both eyes are not looking at the same object/point in space, then it will usually result in seeing two different images/double vision/diplopia.

What does it mean to have prism put in your glasses?

When light doesnt enter the eye correctly because of a refractive error in the cornea (basically your cornea lens is out of whack and mis-shaped) you will see double because you are seeing one thing in one place with one eye and another thing in another place with the other eye. A prism in your glasses pulls the image in the bad eye back into place fusing the images and relaxing your eye. Some people dont exactly see double but get headaches because their eyes are being strained, a prism will usually do the trick.

How can you improve your eyesight?

Proper nutrition, including enough vitamin A, can keep your vision functioning well. But there is no proven non-surgical way to improve eyesight caused by a defect in the eye tissues, retina, or optic nerve. Problems with the muscles that control eye coordination (e.g. prism divergence) can be improved with the proper exercises. Glasses and contact lenses can make your vision clearer. However, they can be harmful to your eyesight in the long run. In order to improve your eyesight, you could do eye exercises designed to permanently improve your vision. Such exercises only take about 10 minutes a day and can be effective if done correctly.

What do diffraction grating glasses do to light?

Separate the colors that make up white light, like a triangular prism. And I suggest looking at a bright light and putting your hand between the glasses and the light.

What are diffraction glasses?

Diffraction glasses differ from traditional glasses because they use a special pair of lenses that offer light grating as an entertainment source. When viewing a light source the grating effect will break the light into a prism of colors, offering the user a unique experience. You can check out companies like GloFX to view the various glasses that will feature this special lens. They also have a great FAQ page about diffraction glasses, you can read up on it by searching GloFX Glasses What Are Diffraction Glasses.

Can a prism correction for double vision cause a distortion in the field of vision with progressive lense prescription?

Since my last eye glass prescription I have been having double vision in my right eye. I only have had the double vision with the glasses on. Now the optometrist has made a pair of glasses for me to try out that has prism correction. Needless to say I still see an glowing halo around bright objects like car roofs, two red stop lights one over the other, and the lines on the road seem like there is another line floating a foot or two above the other; very pronounced at night with lines of reflective paint. Now here is where one must think outside the box (or prism) with a discovery I've made. By looking through the tiny area immediately where the lens and the frames meet (where the thickness of the lens is beveled to fit the thickness of the frames) I see perfectly. I can read all of the lines of the eye chart with perfect clarity and contrast through this narrow gap. Of course I was told that was not the correct way to use the glasses. But there is a clue there somewhere. That area where the glass is beveled certainly looks like an extreme prism to me, either that or the pinhole effect is straightening things up. So regardless of the prismatic correction manufactured into the lens, which doesn't work, there is that tiny section of the lens/frame that gives me hope that someone will use this discovery to help me see out of my right eye properly before long. I hope this will help start a discussion on this subject and we can all make some progress. MSGray I have developed monocular diplopia (double vision in one eye) after pterygium removal surgery and have noticed the same thing as you when looking throught the edge of the glasses lens or so i thought... then I realized if i just covered one tiny part of my eye with any object it would bring the objects back together. still no luck on getting rid of the double vision though.
