During pregnancy the hormone prolactin promotes the necessary development in the mammary glands for the production of milk although the high progesterone levels will suppress milk production. After birth the placenta is gone and with it the progesterone that it was producing. At this point the mammary glands are ready to supply milk to the newborn infant. The infant by suckling causes a reflex release of milk. It is the continued stimulation by the baby that keeps the milk supply constant.
