There must be a supportive relationship with a health-care provider. One primary care provider should be all that a person with hypochondria has. Patients should not have their symptoms denied or challenged, but health care provider should tell the patient that they do not have disease. Health care provider should continue to follow-up with patient to help control symptoms.

Some antidepressants, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can help.

Psychotherapy can be helpful as can Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. These therapies should help to allow patient to recognize what seems to make the symptoms worse, to develop methods of coping with the symptoms, and trying to keep themselves active.

Hypochondria (Hypocholdriasis) is a true mental health disorder that needs to be diagnosed. It means that someone is totally preoccupied with minor health or physical symptoms that have no real underlying illness or disease. An example would be having a briuse. You may know that the bruise came from banging into something but the hypochondriac will obsess over the fact that this bruise could be some malignant tumor under the skin. This is something that they believe to be true and is sometimes referred to as a true phobia. Treatment would be psychiatric help and counseling. Malingering on the other hand is when someone makes up symptoms or exaggerates symptoms, knowingly, in order to gain some benefit such as attention, or financial assistance (like someone who may have strained a back muscle at work will malinger in order to get workers comp benefits and paid time off and possibly a law suit). Since it is something that they know they are doing you can choose to ignore. Like with a child, if you ignore the bad behavior and praise the good behavior it will eventually go away. There is usually some underlying mental health issue that allows someone to malinger and they will still usually benefit from some sort of psychiatric counseling.
