Usually, they aren't. Most rib fractures are just left to heal on their own. Often a rib belt will be provided or sometimes the rib cage will be taped, but if it's a minor fracture, you'll be told to just take it easy and don't make it worse. On the other hand, if a rib is completely broken, with sharp edges and a possibility of puncturing a lung, it will be surgically wired to minimize further risk. Only an x-ray will determine if the break is severe enough to justify surgery.

When you have a broken rib you should sleep so that there is no pressure on it. This might mean sleeping on your back or on your good side.
All treadmill would give you approximately the same type of cardio workout. To increase your workout, you may want to choose a treadmill that allows you to walk fast or to walk "uphill".

You could have a bruised or broken rib. However, a broken rib usually causes your breathing to be painful. If this is not the case the bruise is more likely. If the symptoms don't subside I recommend seeing your doctor.
