Mama Day - the matriarch of the Day family. She is the sister of Abigail and the great aunt of Cocoa (Ophelia/Baby Girl) and eventually, George - through marriage. She is a mystical woman with magic powers of good. She often buts head with Dr, Buzzrd and id ultimately responsible for the death of Ruby. Everyone in Willow Springs knows that they can go to her for advice and help with medical problems.
Cocoa - she is the wife of George (and later another unnamed man after the death of George). She is Abigail's granddaughter and the daughter of the deceased Grace. She was born in Willow Springs where she was raised by her grandmother and her aunt, Mama Day. She eventually moves to new york in search of a job where she meets George. She initially dislikes him, but she grows to love him. She later names her younger son after George in his memory, though it is not his son.
George - he is the husband of Cocoa. He was born into an orphange, but he ultimately becomes successful and starts his own engineering business. He is a big football fan. He met Cocoa after an interview where she was looking for work. he does not hire her but he eventualy is responsible for her finding work elsewhere. He shows Cocoa New York and they eventually fall in love. He has a heart condition, which is the ultimate reason for his death. His death was a sacrifice to help the ill Cocoa overcome her illness.
Abigail - she is the sister of Mama Day. She is not as hot headed and ill-mannered as her sister. She is sometimes seen as a bit naive. She is the grandmother of Cocoa and the daughter of three girls, all who die before Abigail. She has a bad upbeinging in the "other place" and refuses to ever step foot in their again, except to warn Mama Day of Cocoa's illness.
