He had something wrong with him physically, so were the rumors. Mr. Sullivan was known to make strange motions and postures on camera, grabbing his pants like they were loose or something, he also had an odd way of pronouncing words- Shew for Show is a good example. Everybody was guessing, what was wrong with Ed? no clear answers. One can rule out Visual problems and hearing loss, but this still leaves a lot of possibles. Quiz-show panelist and host ( Eye Guess) Bill Cullen had a crippling Limp and odd walking posture, was rarely seen walking about on shows. Mr. Cullen was extremely sensitive about this handicap. Oddly, he never tried to hide his visual problems, always wore specs. so it goes. Ed Sullivan had something wrong with him, But What?

Is erectile dysfunction curable?

Erectile dysfunction (male impotence or simply ED) is a sexual disorder, associated with inability to build up or sustain an erection of the penis adequate for acceptable sexual performance. It is estimated that as many as 30 million males worldwide are afflicted with this condition. Erectile dysfunction may sometimes appear together with another condition called premature ejaculation. Erectile dysfunction has several degrees of severity and it may be divided into two groups: ED due to physical impossibility and underlying causes and ED due to psychological problems. Normally psychological impotence is easier to treat and with more success rate than physical impotence. It is essential to identify the underlying causes of both types of impotence before effective treatment can be administered. The first step to combat ED or other virility problems such as premature ejaculation is by encouraging the male to admit and confess his problems. Males are often ashamed to admit problems which are seen as degrading to their masculinity. In such condition, the spouses or partners have a major role to play in encouraging the males to seek treatment for their conditions. The other half should support their partners and be patient at all times, no treatment would cure ED immediately. Treatment could commence when the male patients are willing to confess and share their problems with a specialist in andrology. Next, the doctors treating the male patients are supposed to identify the core problems to their impotence. The doctors should evaluate whether the impotence is physical or psychological. Physical impotence is associated with vascular problem and blood flow disorder to the penis while psychological impotence may arise due to the psycho-emotional status of the patients. If it is established that a patient is suffering from physical impotence, therapy should be focused on healing and improving his physical health. Underlying diseases which may cause vascular problems such as hardening of penile vessels should be investigated. Such diseases and bad habits as diabetes, heart disease, liver failure, alcoholism, hormone imbalance, smoking and hypertension may lead to male impotence and premature ejaculation. Treatment directed at the underlying causes should commence at the same time specific treatments for ED are applied. Specific treatments to help cure ED range from abstention from bad habits such as cigarette smoking to other proven medical methods which include proper diet, adequate exercise, medications and counseling. As a last resort, surgical intervention may be required for severe ED which cannot be treated by medications. As for psychological impotence, the main causes are depression, anxiety, stress and relationship problems. Such conditions may arise suddenly and sometimes may disappear on its own when the effects of psychological trauma fade. If the symptoms persist, male patients should try talking their spouses, partners or trusted friends. Professional counseling help should be sought if other ways fail to improve the patients' conditions. The best way to combat ED is prevention before the condition arises. Healthy lifestyle, adequate exercise, proper diet and reduction of bad habits will help to reduce the risk of premature ED and prolong virility. Sensitive issues like male potency should be handled with care so that men's pride are not damaged. Likewise, annual medical check up should be done for early detection of health conditions and to allay any fear of developing erectile dysfunction.

Septicemia?

DefinitionSepticemia is the presence of bacteria in the blood (bacteremia) and is often associated with severe infections.Alternative NamesBlood poisoning; Bacteremia with sepsis; Systemic infammatory response syndrome (SIRS)Causes, incidence, and risk factorsSepticemia is a serious, life-threatening infection that gets worse very quickly. It can arise from infections throughout the body, including infections in the lungs, abdomen, and urinary tract. It may come before or at the same time as infections of the bone (osteomyelitis), central nervous system (meningitis), heart (endocarditis), or other tissues.SymptomsSepticemia can begin with spiking fevers, chills, rapid breathing, and rapid heart rate. The person looks very ill.The symptoms rapidly progress to shock with fever or decreased body temperature (hypothermia), falling blood pressure, confusion or other changes in mental status, and blood clotting problems that lead to a specific type of red spots on the skin (petechiae and ecchymosis). There may be decreased or no urine output.Signs and testsA physical examination may show:Low blood pressureLow body temperature or feverSigns of associated disease (such as meningitis, epiglottitis, pneumonia, or cellulitis)Tests that can confirm infection include:Blood cultureBlood gasesCBCClotting studies PTPTTFibrinogenlevelsCSF cultureCulture of any suspect skin lesionPlatelet countUrine cultureTreatmentSepticemia is a serious condition that requires a hospital stay. You may be admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU).Fluids and medicines are given by an IV to maintain the blood pressure.Oxygen will be given. Antibiotics are used to treat the infection.Plasma or other blood products may be given to correct any clotting abnormalities.Expectations (prognosis)What to expect depends on the organism involved and how quickly the patient is hospitalized and treatment begins. The death rate is high -- more than 50% for some organisms.ComplicationsSepticemia can rapidly lead to adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), septic shock, and death.Septicemia associated with meningococci can lead to shock or adrenal collapse ( Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome).Calling your health care providerSepticemia is not common but is devastating. Early recognition may prevent progression to shock.Seek immediate care if:A person has a fever, shaking chills, and looks very illAny person who has been ill has changes in mental statusThere are signs of bleeding into the skinCall your health care provider if your child's vaccinations are not up-to-date.PreventionAppropriate treatment of localized infections can prevent septicemia. The Haemophilus influenza B (HIB) vaccine and S. pneumoniae vaccine have already reduced the number of cases of septicemia in children. Both are recommended childhood immunizations. In certain cases, people who are in close contact with someone with septicemia may be prescribed preventative antibiotics.ReferencesEnrione MA, Powell KR.
