Mosquitoes are in the Family Culicidae and the Order Diptera (flies). As such, they undergo complete metamorphosis and go through four distinct life stages, similar to, for example, a butterfly. The four stages in the mosquito life cycle are egg, larva, pupa, and adult. But a butterfly's stages are caterpillar, cocoon, and adult.

The simplest difference between the two insects' life cycles is the number of steps. Butterflies have 4 steps in the life cycle, while cockroach only has 3. The butterfly's infant stage, called the larva, is very different in physiology from the adult stage, whereas the cockroach's infant stage, the nymph, is very similar.

A butterfly metamorphose takes place in a cocoon and a frog metamorphoses takes place in the open. Another difference is frogs typically live at least a few years where as a butterfly, depending on species, can have a life span of a few days to months.
