The significant differences in the Gross Anatomy of Females that distinguishes them from their male counterparts. These differences result from adaptations to the bone structure of females to accommodate child birth.
  • The pelvic inlet is wider which results a wider and shorter pelvis.
  • In addition the pubic arch ( the angle between the left and right pubic bones) is greater on females (80 to 90 degrees) that males (50 to 60 degrees).
  • The coccyx is also shorter and wider on females than males.

N.B. (nota bene)

The increase in the horizontal distance between acetabulums (The acetabulum is cavity on the OS coxae that articulates with the femur to form the hip joint) that results from the wider hips in most women, increases a woman's chance of developing knee injuries when pursuing athletic endeavors.

This is because the angle of convergence (the formed angle between the right and left femura) at the knees in greater females than males, causes an uneven weight distribution at the knee joint, which causes uneven wear on the meniscus. Resulting an increase in injuries.

That is a very good question! The male and female pelvis differs remarkably. In fact it is the pelvis, which help you to differentiate between male and female bones. The male pelvis is designed by nature for standing erect. The female pelvis is compromised in order to deliver the baby. The male pelvis is more conical. The female pelvis is more cylindrical. This has to be there as the size of the head of the baby is not going to be lesser as it comes down. The female pelvis is relatively larger as compared to other body bones. The list of the differences is very long and can be found in any good medical book of Forensic medicine.

What is the main difference between pelvis of animals and human?

A human female's pelvis is wider; a male's pelvis is narrower. The wider pelvis assists if a female becomes pregnant, because hormones allow ligaments to relax, which further widens the pelvic outlet. This allows the baby's head and shoulders more room to pass through the pelvic bones as the infant enters the vaginal canal.
