What is a baby soft spot?

Firstly, most people are unaware that babies actually have a baby soft spot on the top of the head which is diamond or kite shaped (anterior fontanel) and another one at the back of the head which is triangular (posterior fontanel).A newborn's soft spot exists where the skull has not completely closed at birth. The anterior fontanel is generally about two inches wide and can remain to some degree until the baby is around eighteen months of age. The posterior fontanel is only half an inch wide and closes relatively quickly between the ages of six to twelve weeks.Essentially, the soft spots are an area of an infant's head where the skull plates have not yet formed together to protect the brain.the soft spot in the babies head where the skull is not fully developed.

Your baby has a soft spot near the front of his skull how long before it hardens?

The fontanelle or "soft spot" at the front of a baby's head is where 4 bones join in the skull. It is not fragile, but also not the spot you truly want to expose to the elements. It's soft and vulnerable as there is no bone between your baby's brain and the outside world. There is tough tissue there to take the place of a skull while it grows. When a baby transitions from infant to toddler and starts walking, the fontanelle area allows for the bones to shift and absorb impact upon a fall. You'll sometimes see the soft spot pulse a bit as you watch blood flow around your baby's brain and skull when they are calm and resting. It's normal!

What happens if a baby is born without a soft spot?

I was born without a soft spot. If they had not performed surgery when they had my brain wouldn't not have had room to grow. This then causes many issues. The Brain would continue growing without room to grow, causing the eye balls to come out of their sockets causing blindness, skin to peel off the ears and other parts of the face trying to make room and other things like that. Imagine putting a wet sponge inside a very small ball and letting it grow inside when you know the dry sponge is much bigger then the ball. Difference with a human head is that your head will try to create room by pushing other parts out of the way....which causes brain damage and other health issues. Luckily Everything was a GREAT success for me and I never had any problems after the surgery save a large scar from the front of my skull all the way to the back. They never really told me what causes it. Just that sometimes it happens. Maybe the fact that I was a big baby had something to do with it, I don't know. Basically babies born without soft spots need surgery as soon as possible to correct the problem (by having a soft spot created for them) so then everything goes as normal and the brain has room to grow. The longer you wait the more mental and physical damage it had on the growing child.
