Dynein helps produces cilia and flagella. Ciliated cells in the respiratory tract propel mucus with dust and bacteria away from the lungs. If Cilia is not produced , you are more suseptible to breathing problems.

Also the sperm is moved by its tail (the flagella) if this is not produced, the sperm cannot reach the egg. (this is the only method of propulsion for the sperm.)

What pattern of inheritance would lead a geneticist to suspect that an inherited disorder of cell metabolism is due to a defective mitochondrial gene?

The disorder would always be inherited from the mother because the mother's mitochondrial gene is the only one that survives when the zygote is formed. The gamete from the mother contains all the information. The head of the father's sperm is the only part that survives during fertilization. The tail of the sperm containing the male's mitochondria (an their genes) is lost when the zygote begins development. Thus it is only from the mother that the disorder can be inherited.

Many inherited disorders of humans appear in children of parents who do not have the disorder how can you explain that the parents do not have the disorder but the child does?

This could be due to carriers of the gene passing it on to their child, resulting in the child having two copies of the gene - one inherited from each parent - and manifesting the disorder. It is also possible for new mutations to occur in the child that cause the disorder, even if the parents do not carry the gene for it.
