rRNA is a massive molecule consisting of two parts; a small section, and a large section. It is between these two sections that the mRNA fits, and into the large selection that the tRNA complexes (with attached amino acids) are taken. rRNA molecules have two main binding sites. When a tRNA molecule is bound, the mRNA molecule moves along one space, and another tRNA molecule binds. When this happens, the amino acids at the ends of the tRNA molecules are very close together, and a peptide bond forms. The mRNA then moves along again and the first tRNA molecule breaks away. Ribosomes translate the instructions on messenger RNAto protein by means of transfer RNA/amino acid complexes.

  1. A messenger RNA molecule binds to the active site of a ribosome.
  2. A transfer RNA/amino acid complex attaches to a matching nucleotide triplet on the messenger RNA at the active site.
  3. The ribosome catalyses binding of the amino acid into a protein molecule then separates the amino acid from the transfer RNA that had carried it.
  4. The ribosome ejects the free transfer RNA and advances the messenger RNA at the active site by three nucleotides.
  5. Repeat at step 2; unless the nucleotide triplet at the active site is a stop code, then detach the finished protein molecule.

The primary function of Ribosomes is to read and translate the cell's genetic code, then reproduce (replicate) the proteins that the code represents.
