Homeostasis is the maintainence of a constant internal environment eg keeping a steady body temperature.

The body has to have a way of detecting whether conditioins inside the body have changed eg has the blood got warmer or colder. This is the job of the receptors.

For example receptors in the brain monitor the blood temperature and signal to the body if the temperature rises or falls. Using this information the body can react in the correct way eg by sweating if it is too hot or shivering if it is too cold.
