The nerve for the thumb, called the median nerve, provides sensation and controls movement in the thumb. It carries signals from the brain to the muscles in the thumb, allowing us to feel and move it. Damage to this nerve can result in numbness, weakness, or loss of function in the thumb.
The nerve located on the top of the hand, known as the radial nerve, is responsible for providing sensation and controlling movement in the back of the hand, thumb, and fingers.
The median nerve is a nerve in humans and other animals. It is in the upper limb. It is one of the five main nerves originating from the brachial plexus. The median nerve is formed from parts of the medial and lateral cords of the brachial plexus, and continues down the arm to enter the forearm with the brachial artery. It originates from the brachial plexus with roots from C5, C6, C7, C8, & T1.The median nerve is the only nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the disability that results from the median nerve being pressed in the carpal tunnel.
You have three nerves, which supply your forearm. Radial, ulnar and median nerve. Out of these three nerves, median nerve is the main nerve to supply forearm muscles and some of the hand muscles.
A cut nerve in the wrist may be able to regenerate and heal over time, but it depends on the extent of the damage. If you are experiencing numbness in your thumb, pointer finger, and middle finger, it is important to see a healthcare provider for an evaluation. Physical therapy or surgical intervention may be necessary to help with nerve regeneration and restore sensation.
The thumb is the only structure in the body having a saddle joint.
The median nerve is responsible for both sensation and movement in the hand, in particular the thumb and first three fingers.
The nerve located on the top of the hand, known as the radial nerve, is responsible for providing sensation and controlling movement in the back of the hand, thumb, and fingers.
There are three main nerves found in the arm and hand: the ulnar nerve, median nerve, and radial nerve. The ulnar nerve supplies sensation to the pinky and part of the ring finger, the median nerve supplies sensation to the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring finger, and the radial nerve supplies sensation to the back of the hand and thumb.
The median nerve, this nerve supplies feeling and movement to the thumb and "thumb-side" of the hand.

Indeed. My left thumb developed a deep bone bruise and resultant nerve damage to thumb tip. I was fanatical in my love of hitting and wore my aluminum bats out. However, those "dead bats" caused me to start having pain in my thumb,a burning and tingling sensation at age 14. I'm 35 now and my thumb still bothers me...

It is not one of the cranial nerves (I-XII), it is cervical nerve number 6.
Generally finger numbness is a result of conditions that affect nerves and/or blood vessels that supply the fingers. It is also associated with tingling. It need to be sorted out if the problem associated with only left thumb. Frequent symptoms are referred as finger paresthesia.
The radial nerve runs along the thumb-side edge of the forearm. It gives sensation to the back of the hand from the thumb to main knuckle of the back surface of the ring and middle fingers. The median nerve travels through carpal tunnel.Sensory branch to the thumb, index finger, long finger, and half of the ring finger.Motor branch to the thenar muscles(abductor pollicis brevis, flexor pollicis brevis, opponens pollicis) of the thumb. The ulnar nerve travels Guyon's canal.Sensory branch to the little finger and half the ring finger.Motor branch to adductor pollicis and hypothenar muscle(abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi brevis, opponens digiti minimi).
