Atmospheric oxygen is a result of photosynthesis by plants (including cyanobacteria - blue-green algae - which was responsible for the initial conversion of earth's atmosphere from its anoxic state).

Photosynthesis is carried out in plants. It employs energy from the sun and naturally occurring water and carbon dioxide to produce sugar and oxygen gas. The oxygen is released to the atmosphere, and the sugar is formed into plant matter, which eventually dies and is buried and turned into coal and oil and gas.

The oxygen is inhaled by the diaphragm and intercostal muscles (the ones around the rib cage) contracting they expand the chest cavity and create a partial vacuum by doing this the air is drawn in and goes down your trachea and the epiglottis opens up to allow air into the lungs (its a small flap) otherwise your air would go into your stomach which would be no use. The air then enters the bronchi which then spreads out to bronchus and then they split into bronchioles which have little air sacs attached to them called alveoli the alveoli is a spongy tissue this is needed for the oxygen to diffuse into the blood stream the oxygen if diffused into the pulmonary artery which then carries the oxygen into the heart but before the oxygen can do that it needs to hitch a ride the oxygen is transported by the red blood cells in our body. The pulmonary artery connects to the heart, it enters the heart and fills the left atrium the valve then opens the atrium contracts and it goes into the left ventricle which then does a massive contraction which pushes all the blood into the aorta and around the body to all the capillaries for respiration the act of transferring oxygen and glucose into energy, the oxygen then travels to a certain area of the body which needs energy for movement it reacts with glucose to create energy the energy creates a bi product just as burning wood leaves ash it leaves behind water and carbon dioxide the water is absorbed as well as the carbon dioxide into the red blood cells but it's the plasma (the liquid in the cells) that allow it to do so. They are transported to the heart again but via the vena cava both the inferior vena cava and the exterior vena cava which fill the right atrium which contracts as the valve opens filling the left ventricle which contracts for this deoxygenated blood to go back to the lungs to pick up more oxygen this is the respiratory system i didn't tell you about how we got the glucose (which comes from what we eat and drink) but that is for some other time. This is only an understanding to level 7 science or in equivalence a B-C Grade GSCE

Oxygen is a "waste" byproduct of photosynthesis. Plants use sunlight to combine water and carbon dioxide into sugar and "excess" oxygen molecules, which is then released into the atmosphere (or ocean, in the case of algae).
