Cells grow when a single cell divides into two cells and that process keeps going it is called mitosis. when you reach adult hood and you stop growing it will still do this process because the old cells died out dryed out and new ones will replace them.

Single cells go through a life cycle, just like our cells do. Each cell has a period of "normal life" and then when the time is right it will start the process of cell division. The cell will make copies of everything within. The DNA will replicate and the chromosomes separate. Once there are two copies of the DNA the cell divides all of its contents. These two copies are also called clones, and they are almost completely identical.

The actual growth occurs by nutrients entering the cell by diffusion, or transport through pumps and pores. The cell uses these nutrients to build whatever it needs at that time. If it is growing it may need to build structural proteins. These proteins would be responsible for the shape changes we see. The process involves gene regulation and nutrients supply.

The cells do not grow or increase in size, but only in numbers. This results from the cell cycle which continuously occurs within an organism.
