A dam is a wall of solid material built across a river. As a result water is stored in a lake that will form upstream of dam. The main purpose of the most of the dams is to create a reservoir of water to use at a later time. There are different types of dams like concrete dams, arch dams and earth dams. The design and construction of a dam depends upon its purpose and location as well as materials and workforce available.
A dam must be waterlight, and must be also stable. The dam wall must have sufficient strength to firstly bear its own weight and secondly to resist the water pressure in the lake upstream of the dam. It must have an outlet valve to release water in controlled amounts as required. It also needs a spillway so that large volumes of flood water can flow around it without causing any damage to the structure itself.
Dams are extremely useful to us for they help to control floods and supply water to dams and cities. Dams also generate hydroelectric power, and the water stored in the lake is useful for irrigation of crops. The lake that forms behind the dam can be useful for water sports and leisure activities. Often, large dams become tourist attractions of their own sight.
Dams are helpful for us because the direct where the water flows to other places that don't have water
Dams harm the ecosystem by changing the rivers and streams flow. They prevent migrating fish from reaching spawning areas. They can lower the water level so low fish are left without enough water to survive or stranded on land. Dams also alert landscape around and being them creating lakes were their were none, and dry land that was once under water.
because if it was too low the water will spread and we will have a flood.
AND Some dams are built where a river flows through a steep sided valley this limits the area consumed by the lake that is formed, minimising environmental impact. To confine the biggest volume of water possible the dam needs to be high, this also can be useful for hydro electric facilities due to the immense pressures involved with such a concentrated volume of water...
They are both good and bad.
Good
- can give off electricity
-flood control
-can be used for irrigation
-water and etc
Bad
-fish cant go upstream to lay eggs such as salmon. (some dams may have a fish ladder for that problem)
-very expensive and takes a lot of time to build
Really its up to you on how you see them. I like to think of them as good ,they are very beautiful sometimes and they dont make them any more plus all the good things they do. their are plenty of things they do soo like i said its up to you
Dams can be beneficial to the environment because it helps with biodiversity. This is because it creates a still body of water allowing new organisms to grow.
dams are bad because they can flood the land around it,also can stop the correct speed of the river it is connected to.that is why i think dams are bad!
Probably not because beavers build dams too.
because
you dont tell
It is called a limiting factor. It limits the population.
Ecosystem is a habitat where as community is a bunch of animals
unmanaged ecosystem is an ecosystem that nobody takes care of it.it is untouched ecosystem.
That's known as an ecosystem.
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment. Energy, water, nitrogen and soil minerals are other essential abiotic components of an ecosystem.
harm
because the dams drive away the fish and makes the ecosystem FUNKY
Dams stop the natural flow of a river/water body to disturb the ecosystem with loss of flora and fauna and vast tracts of land on which bio life depends.
Dams disrupt a river's ecosystem.
They can harm fragile ecosystems
because they want to
yes but some organisms can harm a ecosystem
No, giraffes do not harm the Earth. No species in its proper ecosystem is harmful to the Earth as a whole. Rather, every species in its natural ecosystem helps to support the ecosystem. The only exception to that rule is humans.
Yes
I think so but im not to sure
yes because it harm us as well as ecosystem.
Yes kinda, It is more commonly known as the marine ecosystem or biome and includes all large water masses. (Lakes, dams, oceans, river ect.)
