The cell membrane is semi-permeable, which means that it allows certain substances to go through.

For substances that are too large, there are vacuoles and transport proteins that assist the large substances.

There is also facilitated transport, passive transport, and active transport. Passive transport is the only one where substances can go through the membrane without the cell expending energy.

Threr are many different ways, but the two main ways are by Active Transport (requires energy), and Passive Transport (doesnt require energy)

Lets start with passive transport. Passive Transport transports nutrients WITH the concentration gradient. There are two types of passive transports, neither of them require energy. There is Simple Diffusion, in which oil soluable (hydrophobic/nonpolar) substances can just "seap" through the cell membrane (because it is also oily). The other Passive Transport is Facilitated Diffusion. This is required for substances that cannot penetrate the oily cell membrane (like water; substances that are hydrophillic/polar). They enter the cell via the help of membrane proteins. Again, NO ENERGY is required.

Active Transport has many different ways, but they all require energy and usually are against the concentration gradient.

Which part of a cell allows nutrients and other materials to enter or leave the cell?

Transport proteins allow nutrients to enter and leave cells. Transport proteins are peppered throughout the cell membrane. Most molecules need the transport proteins to enter or leave the cell, but it's possible for some molecules, like water, to diffuse through the membrane by osmosis.

What structures allow large important molecules to pass through the cell membrane?

A cell membrane is in every plant and animal and it lets in water, nutrients, and food to the cell. The membrane MUST be permeable because then it wouldn't of let the in water, nutrients, and food into the cell. If the membrane was stiff, the molecules of water, nutrients, and food would not be able to fit into the cell.

What does homeostasis have to do with with the cell membrane?

The function of a cell membrane is to allow certain things in, such as nutrients, ans out such as toxin wastes out of the cell. This allows the cell to get what it needs in order to function. If a cell is functioning properly, then the body is staying homeostasis.

It lets nutrients into the cell, and lets out wastes from it.

Why does cytoplasm need to enclosed by a semi-permeable membrane?

The cytoplasm is the body of a cell. It is surrounded by the Cell membrane. Permeable means its ability to allow particles or nutrients to pass through. It is called semi-permeable [membrane] because it only allows some particles or nutrients to pass through, not all.
