I don't know exactly what causes the tear but I do know how I Injured my Obturator exturnus. I was sprinting and attempting to lengthen my stride when I went a little too far, Partially tearing my obturator exturnus. The pain was immediate and three days latter I was unable to take a step at even a quarter of my regular walking stride without sever pain.

there isn't only one muscle there is the psoas major, iliacus, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, tensor fasciae, piriformis, obturator internus, obturator externus, superior gemellus, inferior gemellus, quadratus femoris, adductor longus, adductor brevis, adductor magnus and pectineus All of them are there to allow the leg to move, hope that helped =]
