As the prostate gland becomes enlarged, it presses against the bladder and constricts the urethra, which is the tube that runs from the bladder through the prostate and out through the penis to remove urine from the body.

As the bladder and urethra are constricted, it interferes with the easy flow of urine from the body.

Not only does protate enlargement constrict the urethra, it often leads to infection of the prostate and in some serious cases operation is necessary.

The urethra passes through the prostate. When it enlarges, this squeezes the urethra making it smaller so it is harder for urine and semen to get through.

Prostate problems For men an enlarged or infected prostate can lead to urgency and frequent urination especially at night?

Urgency and frequent urination, especially at night, could indicate an enlarged prostate. This problem is very common among middle-aged men. Statistically, half of all men have some prostate enlargement by age 50, nearly all men by age 70. There are herbal supplements that can reduce the urinary effects of an enlarged prostate, including saw palmetto, pumpkin seed, lycopene, and pygeum. How does enlargement of the prostate gland restrict the normal flow of urine from the bladder?

The male ureter travels down through the center of the prostate gland. If the prostate gland expands (called "benign prostatic hypertrophy", or "BPH"), it expands in all directions, as Einstein taught us. Not only does it get bigger growing outwards, it gets smaller growing inwards. This constricts the ureter, slowing the flow of urine, sometimes to a bare dribble.

What are the symptoms of having an enlarged prostate?

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate may include: frequent urination or urgency to urinate, dribbling of urine, making multiple trips to the bathroom in order to urinate, often close together, difficulty urinating, and the feeling that your bladder is not emptying. These could also note a medical emergency, as they may cause more serious problems such as kidney damage.

How might enlargement of the prostate interfere with the urination or reproductive ability of the male?

Since the urethra passes through the prostate, when the prostate enlarges it presses on the urethra and causes problems with urination. Including the inability to completely empty the bladder, increased urgency, and difficulty starting the stream. Men might experience difficulty during intercourse because of lack of libido and painful ejaculation in addition to the pain during urination. Avoiding prostate problems might involve taking supplements.

How does the enlargement of the prostate gland interfere with a males reproductive function?

The role of the prostate is to produce a liquid that mixes with semen and helps the sperm move through the semen into the woman's body. When a prostate becomes enlarged, it can effect the production of the fluid. In most cases of BPH, as the prostate becomes enlarged, it impacts your ability to urinate, due to putting pressure on the bladder. Also, an enlarged prostate can lead to prostate cancer if not treated.

What does the prostate have to do with urinating a lot?

The prostate's role in urination is related to its location and its potential to affect the urethra. When the prostate gland becomes enlarged, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), it can compress the urethra, which passes through the prostate. This compression can lead to various urinary symptoms, including: Increased frequency of urination: The narrowing of the urethra due to prostate enlargement can result in incomplete emptying of the bladder, leading to the need to urinate more frequently. Urgency: The pressure on the bladder caused by an enlarged prostate can create a sudden and urgent need to urinate. Weak urine stream: Compression of the urethra by an enlarged prostate can restrict the flow of urine, resulting in a weaker stream or difficulty initiating urination. Difficulty starting urination: Enlargement of the prostate can obstruct the flow of urine, making it challenging to initiate urination. Nocturia: Increased urination at night, disrupting sleep patterns, can occur due to an enlarged prostate. These urinary symptoms are characteristic of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and are not typically associated with prostate cancer. However, if you experience any changes in urination patterns, it's essential to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and management.

How might enlargement of the prostate interfere with urination or reproduction in males?

The prostate looks a lot like a bagel or a doughnut with a hole in the middle. Through that hole is the path for the internal part of the penis, just before it exits the body. When the prostate swells it closes around the base of the penis. This strangles the penis for blood flow, urine flow & a swollen prostate doesn't produce the hormones that send the message to the brain to cause an erection. so Prostatitus is a problem for urinary function AND for reproductive, Erectile function.
