The latinate name for the big toe is the Hallucis(Hal-oo-shis), or, more commonly when speaking of one big toe, the hallux. The bones within it are rather unexciting, there are only three. The first is the first metacarpal bone. Each toe has a metatarsal and these are what make up most of the length of your feet. They are not very visible separately in an intact toe as they are all bound under the same skin.
The other two bones in each toe are called the phalangesas as collection. These bones are in the part that is visibly a separate toe. The one closest to the foot, joining directly to the metacarpal is the proximal phalanx. Then the distal phalanx is the next one. In the other toes there is a medial (middle) phalanx, between the proximal and distal phalanges. That is the traditional nomenclature.
However, this whole issue was humorously resolved back in 1991 by a med student who offered formal Latinate names for every toe based on the "Little Piggy" rhyme. John Phillips, then a fourth-year med student at Yale, published these in a letter to the New England JOURNAL OF MEDICINE published February 14, 1991. The "p." stands for "porcellus."
- porcellus fori (big toe), translation: little pig at market
- p. domi (second toe); translation: baby pig at home
- p. carnivorus (third toe), translation: meat-eating piglet
- p. nonvoratus (fourth digit) translation: small pig that has not eaten
- p. plorans domum (smallest toe) translation: piggy crying all the way home
The text of the 18th-century rhyme, which parents still use when playing with their little children's toes, starting by wiggling the hallux and then each smaller toe in turn:
This little piggy went to market. This little piggy stayed home. This little piggy had roast beef, This little piggy had none. And this little piggy cried "Wee! Wee! Wee!" all the way home.

The thumb is missing the distal phalanx, while the big toe is missing the middle phalanx.
The big toe proper has 2 bones. Every other toe has 3 bones. The big toe on each foot has two bones called phalanges: a distal phalanx at the end and a proximal phalanx that connects to a metatarsal bone in the middle foot. All other toes have 3 phalanges, with a medial phalanx between the other two toe bones.
The big toe has two bones: the proximal phalanx and the distal phalanx. These are the bones that make up the main structure of the big toe, allowing for movement and flexibility.
The big toe bone is called the hallux. It is the innermost (most medial) toe of the foot, and is made up of the proximal and distal phalanges.
The little toe is lateral to the foot. It is distal to the torso. Lateral means to the side.
The scientific names for the fourteen phalanges in the foot are as follows: distal phalanx of the hallux, middle phalanx of the hallux, proximal phalanx of the hallux, distal phalanx of the second toe, middle phalanx of the second toe, proximal phalanx of the second toe, distal phalanx of the third toe, middle phalanx of the third toe, proximal phalanx of the third toe, distal phalanx of the fourth toe, middle phalanx of the fourth toe, proximal phalanx of the fourth toe, distal phalanx of the fifth toe, and middle phalanx of the fifth toe.
The thumb is missing the distal phalanx, while the big toe is missing the middle phalanx.
The big toe is at the distal foot. It is the most medial toe.

No the little toe is lateral to the big toe, and so the big toe is medial to the little toe.
The pedal phalanges are the toe bones. The distal phalanges are the finger or toe bones found at the tip of the digits.
The ankle is proximal to the toe and the toe is distal to the ankle

The phalanges, or toe bones, are distal to the metatarsals. They are farther away from the origin of the lower limb.
