The hypothalamus is near the center of your brain. It's your body's thermostat - it controls the temperature of the body.

Your hypothalamus knows what temperature your body should be and will send messages to your body to keep it that way. Most human beings have a body temperature of around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius). Some people will have a normal temperature that's a little higher or lower. Adult body temperatures change slightly during the course of the day, becoming lower in the morning and higher in the evening.

For kids, their body temperature stays pretty much the same from day to day, unless they are affected by very hot or cold temperatures around them or have illnesses that trigger the body's defenses, one of which is to raise the body heat (a fever).

A thermostat is something that you control the temperature within your house, right? Well the brain is kind of like a thermostat for your body - it regulates temperature, movement, speech, and other things like that. It can respond when you tell it to, or it reacts naturally; when your house has reached a certain temperature, it doesn't climb any higher - if your brain decides that enough is enough, you won't be able to continue doing what you were doing before (if that makes sense?).
