The gene for dark coloration in peppered moths may be associated with camouflage. If the moth lives in a darker habitat, then the ability to blend in meant that the darker moths survived over time.

Ohh this is actually a good question I have came across. Okay I'll try and explain it to you.

Pepper moths were originally white because of the type of tree they were generally found around was white, this would demonstrate that the moths had adapted for camouflage. The black pepper moths were easy prey as they stood out, therefore the white pepper moths were of a larger quantity.

However it then goes on to show how the industrial revolution with all the soot being produced covered the white trees, this meant that the white pepper moth was no longer camouflaged and started getting picked off by its predators pretty easily while the black pepper moths were now camouflaged. Now through natural selection the black pepper moths were the most fit for survival (survival of the fittest), this meant that they now passed on their characteristics onto their young while the white pepper moths would have less of a chance to so while the black pepper moths grew in numbers the white ones dwindled.

Basically it is the story of how natural selection goes about during the process of evolution based upon the environmental factors and characteristics of animals defining how well they will survive there.

What is the melanic form of the peppered moth?

The peppered moth is a classic example used to demonstrate natural selection. It is said that the peppered moth began a light color to blend in to the trees so it would escape being eaten by its predators. However, during the industrial revolution smog darkened the trees and the peppered moth became better adapted as a dark color.
