This makes the cell turgid - like filling a ballon with water. This provides support by physically 'bulking up' the plant
Without the turgidity the organism would become limp, much like lettuce that has been left out of the fridge for days.

Imagine a full balloon as an example of what turgor looks like, and the air being released from that balloon as an example of what turgid pressure release looks like. A fully turgid plant is like that full balloon, firm and healthy.
