Best Answer

When the cell swells with water the hydrostatic force pushes outwards against the cell wall / cell membrane

This makes the cell turgid - like filling a ballon with water. This provides support by physically 'bulking up' the plant

Without the turgidity the organism would become limp, much like lettuce that has been left out of the fridge for days.

Turgor is the pressure exerted on the cell walls by the liquid within. Imagine a full balloon as an example of what turgor looks like, and the air being released from that balloon as an example of what turgid pressure release looks like. A fully turgid plant is like that full balloon, firm and healthy.

Turgor pressure occurs in what kind of solution?

Turgor pressure is usually calculated as the difference between water potential and osmotic potential. In herbaceous plants turgor pressure is almost solely responsible for maintaining an erect habit. Wilting of leaves is due to loss of turgor in the leaf.
