As we age we lose muscle tone, during childbirth the muscles stretch, and sometimes the muscle is torn or cut and there is always our old friend gravity.
On the insides there is just a thin muscle wall between the vagina and the rectum. This actually can become thinner as we age due to having less hormones causing the tissue to become more delicate. and again it all comes down muscle tone.
How to prevent this: practice your Kegel exercise, starting while you are young and never stop. The other and just as important is to keep your abdominal muscles in the best shape possible. Either thru yoga, or whatever exercise you are comfortable with that works on maintaining your posture thru abdominal work.
