A tree when planted will react to the surroundings like soil, nutrients and water amounts. Trees need a certain amount of each of these in order to survive. So technically they do not adapt. They belong in certain temperate zones for a reason. The only ways a tree adapts is to the surroundings it is put in. If a tree is planted over the top of it te tree will bend to get light and the roots will grow away from the other trees. It would be classified as survival of the fittest. They do what they can to survive.
