By deoxyribonucleic acid, of course. All DNA is replicated and subjected to meiosis in the sex cells, sperm and egg in sexually reproducing species, and then passed to progeny. Asexual species either preform fusion or have all daughters with a clone like heredity, excepting mutations.

The X chromosome is always passed by the mother, and the male either passes the X or Y. XY for a boy and XX for a girl.
