An egg cell can store lots and lots of food, for when the foetus (unborn baby) has been fertilized by the sperm. In addition to specialization of the sperm cell, there is also intricate specialization of the egg cell, or, oocyte. The egg cell is made up of many layers. The first or outermost layer is called the jelly coat. The jelly coat has many important functions. First and foremost, it protects the inner contents of the egg. The coat keeps too many sperm from getting in contact and fertilizing the egg. The acrosomal reaction. or the reaction that begins fertilization stage, occurs because of proteins that exist in the jelly coat. The next layer of the egg is the vitelline envelope. The vitelline envelope has the sperm binding receptors on it. The next "layer" is of the cortical granules. The cortical granules release enzymes that cause the region between the vitelline layer and jelly coat to be depolarized, meaning no other sperm are able to bind to the egg anymore. Within the vitelline layer, there is mitochondria and a nucleus. The nucleus contains the genetic material of the female, and the mitochondria (which are more numerous in the egg than they are in the sperm) are used for development. In addition, the sperm mitochondria are actually destroyed soon after they enter the egg, because of an ubiquitin tag. That's why your mitochondria come primarily from your mother.
The egg cell is specialized to join with the sperm and provide food for the furhter growth of the newly formed cell.
