Four years ago I moved house taking with me a pot into which I had placed a Maraschino cherry from a neighbour's garden. During year one, a seedling appeared. I planted it in year two. The small tree flowered in year three and produced three cherries in year four.
While waiting for them to achieve the perfect ripeness and imagining how wonderful the much waited-for fruit would taste, the birds ate them. I hope this helps. I have had to move again and left my lovely tree in the garden for, no-doubt, others to savour next year's crop.
Cherries grow on trees because they are the fruit produced by the cherry tree. The tree bears fruit in order to reproduce and spread its seeds. Cherries are a type of drupe fruit, with a single seed in the center.
A drupe is a fruit such as a peach, cherry, or plum that has a hard pit in the center. A pome is a fruit like apple or pear with several small seeds in the center.
The enlarged ovary of a plant is called the fruit.
Plum trees may be either self pollinating or dependent on other (nearby) plum trees for pollination. Check with your local nursery to find out which varieties are which and best suited to your climate and soil type. Generally, trees may begin to bear fruit from one to five years after planting.

It will take you 7 to 10 years to have a tree that is producing fruit if growing a cherry tree from seed.
The seed or pit, is enclosed by the flesh of the cherry fruit
Cherry pits are the seed of the cherry plant. In fact, any fruit "pit" is the seed in the fruit.

It typically takes about 3 to 5 years for limes to grow from seed to fruit-bearing maturity.
It takes about 2-3 years for a pineapple plant to grow from seed and produce fruit.
It typically takes a lime tree about 3 to 5 years to grow from a seed to a fruit-bearing tree.
It typically takes about 5 to 7 years for an apple tree seed to grow into a fruit-bearing tree.
A guava plant typically takes about 2 to 8 years to grow from a seed to produce fruit.
It typically takes about 3 to 5 years for a nectarine tree to grow from seed and start producing fruit.
A cherry pit is a seed. The pit or seed of any fruit is exactly how a new bush or tree is grown. A cherry pit can be planted to grow a cherry tree. It'll take a long time, though. A 5-year-old sapling isn't very big. You can plant it and try, but it'll be a few years before a cherry tree will produce cherries.
