This was the original answer quoted. I got 18000000000, approximately two thirds of the first answer. Since both answers are estimates, it won't pay to split hairs over it, but I did think it might be interesting to explain how I got the figure.
Someone else at Wikianswers reminded me that the density of a person is very similar to the density of water (since our bodies are 70 per cent water anyway). That is 1 gram per cubic centimetre.
I estimated the length of an index finger at 10cm and the radius of the cross-section as 0.75cm. That gave me a volume of 0.000017 cubic metres. Using the density of water to determine the mass of a finger gives an answer of about 17 grams.
Another reason why it is hard to be accurate in this estimate is because no one can be certain how many cells there are in the human body. The average estimate is 75,000,000,000,000 (75 trillion).
Finally, assuming that cells are evenly spread by mass throughout the body (ie 1kg of one part of the body will contain the same number of cells as 1kg of any other part), we can use the ratio of the mass of the finger to the mass of the whole body (an average man has a mass of 70kg), to find that the finger, with a mass of approximately one "four thousandth" of the whole body should contain one four thousandth of all the cells.
In my calculation, the figure was the one written above, 18,000,000,000 or 18 billion.
