Best Answer

Insects usually have 2 compound eyes but their vision has two distinct organs:

  • compound eyes, which are made up of multiple lenses and cell groups (ommatidia) ranging in number from 2 to over 10,000 per eye in the dragonfly.
  • simple eyes (ocelli) which have light detecting cells of various complexity, the simplest being "eye spots" or pigment pits. Many insects such as flies and wasps have 3 ocelli in a group between their compound eyes.
