Four (4) is the number of walking legs on a butterfly.

Specifically, as an insect, a butterfly has three pairs of legs. The first pair is not critical to the butterfly's movement. It will be the two middle and the two rear legs which enable the butterfly to negotiate plant parts and terrain that it cannot - or "prefers" not to - fly to.
