there are seven pairs of ribs that are comlpetely attached bonetobone and there are three pairs that are attached wiht cartilage. the last remaining"floating" ribs are not attached. All the ribs are atached to the spine.

There are 12 pairs of rib found in the human body. Each pair is connected to a corresponding thoracic vertebra (backbone), i.e. the first part of rib is connected to the first thoracic vertebra (T1), second pair of ribs to the second thoracic vertebra (T2) and so on.
