My daughter had this as a science question. We went about it the following way:
Determine the volume of the tree (cone shape): 1/2 (Pi)(r-squared)(height)
Determine the volume of 1 pine needle (prism shaped?): 1/2 (alt)(base)(length)
Divide the volume of the needle into the volume of the tree
Make assumption as to how much of the tree's volume is wood and air and subtract it...
Tree: 1/2(3.14)(24*24)(96) - 2 feet radius and 8 ft tree converted to inches
Tree Vol: 57,876 inches (rounded)
Pine Needle Vol: 1/2 inch long, 1/32 in wide, 1/64 in height
Pine Needle Vol: (.5*.03125*.0156*)*.5 = .000122 inches
How many needles would fill the vol of the tree? 57876/.000122
WOW!!!: 474,174,124 needles BUT...
There is a lot of air and wood that make up the volume of the tree. How much? I assume 7/8 is air and wood and 1/8 of the volume is needles:
474,174,124*.125= 55,927,176
Pine trees themselves can be identified because they are the only trees that have bundled needles: groups of needles wrapped firmly together at one end. Most olny have up to seven needles in a bundle!
An evergreen tree, pine, christmas, you get the picture.
While some parts of a Christmas tree might be edible, such as the pine needles which can be used for making tea or infused in recipes, the tree itself is not meant to be consumed. The sap and needles of some conifer trees can be toxic if ingested in large quantities, so it is best to avoid eating a Christmas tree.
Christmas trees, typically pine or fir trees, smell like pine due to the presence of volatile organic compounds called terpenes in their needles. Terpenes release a strong scent when the tree is cut, contributing to the familiar pine fragrance associated with Christmas trees.
Oh, dude, pine needles are grouped in bundles called fascicles. Each fascicle typically has a specific number of needles depending on the type of pine tree. So, like, next time you see a pine tree, you can impress your friends with your knowledge of fascicles. Cool, right?
An eight-foot Christmas tree can have anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 needles, depending on the type of tree and its density. For example, a full fir tree may have more needles compared to a sparser pine. The exact number can vary significantly based on the specific species and how the tree is shaped.
If you are asking if one can be allergic to pine tree needles, the answer is YES. You can be.
They are needles
pine needles in Tagalog: no direct translation but it is referred to as pine tree also in Tagalog. Example is the Baguio pine tree.
A baby pine tree may have pine needles falling off of the tree because it is too dry. It may also have pine needles dropping because of the change of the season.
