If mother has ab blood type is it possible for child to have o blood type?

We are looking for the possible blood types of a FATHER.

Available information:

• Mother type OO = only the O gene is available
• Baby type AB = The A and B genes are available.

Baby recieves one gene from each parent:

• Even if the father is AB, he can only contiribute one gene to the baby
• The mother will contribute an O gene regardless

Generally speaking, a Type O mother cannot have a Type AB baby.

HOWEVER: There is more to ABO blood typing that just the ABO gene.

There is also an inhibitory gene that will change any genotype into the phenotype O.

Therefore a person with genetically AB blood can be tested as having Type O.

• Baby is type AB which requires an A gene from one parent and a B from the other.

If the mother has the inhibitory gene affecting her AA, AO or AB type,

then the Type AB baby is definitely possible given the right set of complementary genes in the father.

Except in the case of a rare genetic mutation, no as the gene for 'O' blood type is recessive. Even if the father is an 'O' blood type (he would have to have 'OO' genes) then the child may have 'AO' or 'BO' genes but this would manifest as an 'A' or 'B' bloodtype due to the recessive nature of the 'O' gene. In this case the child's child may be 'O' with the right breeding combination however :)
