FAD stands for flavin adenine dinucleotide. It is a coenzyme involved in respiration. It function is to accept 2 hydrogen atoms from succinate in the krebs cycle, and so oxidising succinate to fumerate.

In the electron transport chain, FAD gives up these hydrogen atoms which are split into a proton an an electron. The electron is passed down a series of electron carriers which are at sequentially lower energies - the energy dissipated is used to actively transport the H+ from the matrix into the intermembrane space. This will create a diffusion gradient and the H+ will diffuse back into the matrix via a protein channel with a bound ATPsynthase enzyme. This enzyme catalyses the phosphorylation of ADP to ATP - the 'energy curreny' of the cells.
