UR answer:-)ogga booga Leaf is an important organ in a plant, for it is here that the plant makes its food. The leaf cells are highly specialized to carry out the process of photosynthesis. It digests food, assimilates, excretes water (transpiration), carries on respiration, & sends its surplus food to other parts of the plant. Some more details!!

LEAF TISSUES & THEIR FUNCTIONS.

  1. upper epidermis: it forms a single layer on the upper side of the leaf. These cells form a tough water proof wall which protects by preventing the drying out of the tissues underneath.
  2. pslisade tissue: they r long thin cells below the epidermis layer. they contain green colored bodies called chloroplasts, which contain chorophyll-the most important pigment in carrying out photosynthesis.
  3. spongy tissues: they r loosely spacrd with many air spaces, lying under palaside tissue, having no definite arrangement & hence the name "spongy".their main function is digestion & assimilation. the air spaces between them make possible the taking & giving off O2,CO2 & water vapour.
  4. lower epidermis: its a single layer made of ordinary epidermal cells & guard cells. the guard cells occur in pair & contain choroplast unlike epidermal cells. their shape is like that of kidney bean with concave sides facing each other. the arrangement leaves a small pore between the guard crll called stoma which permits gases to enter & leave the air spaces inside the leaf.

Although in most plants it occurs mainly in the leaves, it can take place in any green tissue containing chlorophyll.

In the leaves since that is the part of a plant that is constantly exposed to sunlight. Gas transfers also occur here.
