Dirt is not only a home to many creatures and bacterium but it also serves a means of transfer and retaining nutrients. As organic material falls on top of the soil decomposers break down the material and expel it as waste. The waste seeps into the soil and is eventually absorbed once more through the roots of trees and other plants.
