A dead plant is still considered biotic even though it is dead because it was part of a living biotic system.Abiotic is a term describing something that never has been and never will be alive e.g rocks, water, temperature .

A dead log is biotic because it was once living. Anything that is living or once living organisms or things derived from a living organism is considered as biotic.

I have always wondered about this , too. But they are biotic because they can be used as food for other organisms. Abiotic things can't. It is hard to get nourishment from eating rocks.
