There are three domains of life, Prokarya, Eukarya and Archaea. Plants, animals and fungi all fall under Eukarya (Cells with nuclear envelopes and membranes). Bacteria are prokaryotic, and do not have a nucleus or nuclear membrane.

Fungi are more closely related to animals than they are to plants (despite physical appearances). Fungi and Animals both evolved from a choanoflagellate ancestor (a protist), while plants evolved from another eukaryotic protist lineage (the green algae lineage).

Fungi are neither plants, nor animals, but they are more closely related to animals than plants. They form their own kingdom, under the domain Eukarya.
