I am studying Microbiology in school currently. According to my understanding, conjugation is not a form sexual reproduction, instead, it is asexual reproduction. Reason being, conjugation only involves transfer of genetic information which is the same as sexual reproduction which involves the fusion of garmetes (sex cells)/equal exchange of genetic material. Hope my answer is helpful.

But now, I have a question. Why is conjugation considered a form reproduction when it does not even produce a new offspring?

In what way is conjunction a primitive from of sexual reproduction?

Conjugation is a primitive form of sexual reproduction in bacteria where genetic material is transferred between two cells through a bridge-like structure called pilus. This allows for genetic diversity and the exchange of beneficial traits between bacterial cells.

What is the contrast of fragmentation and conjugation?

Fragmentation involves breaking something into smaller pieces, while conjugation involves joining separate things together. Fragmentation leads to separation and division, while conjugation leads to unity and combination.

Is bacteria asexual sexual or both?

Bacteria can reproduce through asexual means such as binary fission, where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells. Some bacteria can also exchange genetic material with other bacteria through a process called conjugation, which is a form of sexual reproduction in bacteria.

What is the difference between the conjugation that occurs between paramecia and the conjugation that occurs between bacteria?

this Q was awnsered by someone else already and this is what it put and im 90% sure its right- In paaramecia, two individuals of different mating types come together and form a cytoplasmic bridge between them. This is followed by a complex set of divisions and i that ultimately results in an exchange in genetic material between the conjugants analogous to the sexual reproduction seen in multicellular organisms. In bacteria, a structure called the sex pilus "joins" the two organisms and allows for an exchange of genetic information.

What cells act as the gametes in the conjugation of spirogyra or paramecium?

In the conjugation of Spirogyra, the gametes are the specialized reproductive cells called gametangia. In Paramecium, the gametes are the micronuclei, which undergo meiosis to form haploid nuclei for genetic exchange during conjugation.

Which protozoan reproduces by binary fission and conjugation?

The protozoan Paramecium reproduces by binary fission, which is a form of asexual reproduction where the cell divides into two daughter cells. Additionally, Paramecium also reproduces by conjugation, which is a form of sexual reproduction where two cells exchange genetic material.

What is the form of sexual reproduction in some bacteria?

Sexual reproduction doesn't exist in bacteria but bacterial conjugation does. DNA transfer between bacterial cells typically involves small pieces of DNA in the form of plasmids or chromosomal fragments. These new fragments can give antibiotic resistance and other genes that are helpful to the bacteria.

Do spirogya reproduce by conjugation?

Yes, Spirogyra reproduces by conjugation, which is a form of sexual reproduction. During this process, two filaments align side by side, and the cells form conjugation tubes through which they exchange genetic material. This results in the formation of a zygote, which can develop into a new organism. In addition to conjugation, Spirogyra can also reproduce asexually through fragmentation.

What is conjugation?

Conjugation is a type of sexual reproduction carried on by many protists.Conjugated:Meaning #1: (chemistry)formed by the union of two compounds, joined together especially in a pair or pairs (chemistry) of an organic compound; containing two or more double bonds each separated from the other by a single bond

Is mitosis a form of sexual reproduction?

No it is not. Meiosis is involved in sexual reproduction

What type of reproduction leads to genetic diversity?

Sexual reproduction contributes to genetic diversity.

Which form of reproduction leds to the greatest genetic diversity?

Sexual reproduction.

What is the name of paramecium reproduction?

Paramecium reproduces asexually through binary fission, where the cell divides into two identical daughter cells. They can also undergo conjugation, a form of sexual reproduction, where genetic material is exchanged between two individual cells.
