Part of the elbow is a ball and socket joint, but the elbow is made up of three different kinds of joint.

  • The first joint is between the Humerus (bone of the upper arm) and the Ulna (the larger of the two forearm bones) which is a Hinge Joint. Hinge joints allow for movement along one plane. In the arm, this allows the movement used when a person touches their shoulder with the hand of the same arm.
  • The second joint is between the Humerus and the Radius (the smaller of the two forearm bones) and this is a ball and socket joint.
  • The third joint is between the Radius and the Ulna and this is a pivot joint. A pivot joint allows rotation of a joint, in the arm this allows the movement used when turning the palms upwards or downwards.

What sport do you use the pivot joint in?

You use the pivot joint in various sports such as tennis, basketball, and golf. This joint allows for rotational movement of the bones, facilitating actions like swinging a racket, dribbling a ball, or rotating the torso during a golf swing.

What types of pivot joints are there in your body?

There are not two types of pivot joints, there are two pivot joints: one between the atlas and the axis of the of the cervical vertebrae, the second is in the elbows between the radius in the ulna.

Where is your pivot joint in your face located?

There is only one pivot joint in the body and it is located in the neck. It is the joint between the first and second cervical vertebrae also known as atlas and axis respectively. Axis has a the "peg" part of the pivot projecting upwards and atlas has the hole around it. This is the joint that allows the heart to rotate left to right. There are two pivot joints. One between C1 and C2 of the vertebrae. The second in the forearm between the ulna and radius.
